Sue Sands
Worth Valley Artist
For Sue there has always been a need to be creative. From Drawing, sewing, painting to working with fabric, sometimes technical and precise to other times free flowing.
Amazed by nature and fascinated by the tangled growth of plants and trees left to do their own thing. Often painting in a flurry of activity when trying to capture the feeling of the growing life.
Loving the quick strokes of the impressionist painters which have influenced her, especially Van Gogh’s flower paintings.
Sue attended Bradford Art College in the 60s studying display, working as a window dresser in Bradford.
Sue was approached by a Manchester Theatre Company to make theatrical costumes 1969 – 1970, continuing her interest in being creative with fabric and design.
In the 70s she was involved in technical illustration for Decca TV and Radio. At the time this was a male dominated field and Sue initially worked at home under the pretence that it was her husband who was completing the work!!! When Decca realised, they employed her in the drawing office as the first female Technical Illustrator
in a office of 6 men.
Later, Sue studied Art and Design at Calderdale College.
Which sparked a real interest in painting.
